- Giddhbhoj: Fifteen Stories Reflecting the World Around Us
Giddhbhoj is a collection of fifteen stories that draw their subjects from the realities surrounding ordinary people. The stories look at social problems, rigid beliefs, inequality, environmental concerns, personal guilt, exploitation and the choices people make when confronted with difficult circumstances.
The collection opens with Giddhbhoj, the story of a farmer who is celebrated with the grand title of “Annadata” while standing on the edge of starvation and considering ending his life. An unexpected opportunity places him before a difficult moral choice: whether to become a messiah or remain an ordinary human being. His decision becomes the centre of the story.
Aparadhbodh follows a young man whose exposure to misleading social-media propaganda leaves him confused and directionless. His choices eventually turn him into a murderer, but the guilt that follows refuses to let him find peace.
In Ek Nayi Bhor, a young woman standing close to death discovers an inner strength that makes her refuse to surrender. Those who want to shame and defeat her instead find her standing firmly against the injustices committed against her.
Wah Kaun Thi deals with the restless spirit of a girl whose death and the truth surrounding it were buried in darkness. Badkirdar examines the restrictions imposed upon women through ideas of character, desire and social morality, and the rebellion that can emerge when a person is denied even the smallest part of life on her own terms.
Surkhab focuses on gender discrimination within a Muslim social environment, following a girl who struggles for equal opportunities until circumstances force her to leave her home. Adhoori Azadi examines the conflict between borrowed ideas of Western freedom and the sexual restrictions of Indian society, including the disturbing consequences of unresolved sexual frustration and abuse.
Environmental and social questions become central in Do Boond Paani, where declining water resources eventually make a single drop priceless. Garam Gosht Ka Shaukeen looks at a man consumed by wealth and power who reduces women to objects of sexual consumption.
Jangal Ka Aadmi explores the conflict between indigenous people protecting their land and forests and economic systems advancing in the name of development. Pagli is a love story confronting rigid caste and religious beliefs that value inherited social rules above human relationships.
The collection also includes Jamun Ki Chhaon, about the destruction of greenery under the pressure of a growing population; Akarshan, which examines colour-based prejudice through the experience of a dark-skinned girl; and Khamosh Bagawat, which questions how even a struggle against an oppressive social order can become affected by the very prejudices it seeks to oppose.
The final story, Iddat Ek Vyatha, examines the unequal burden placed upon women by a religiously rooted social practice and the struggle to reconsider traditions that have become increasingly difficult to reconcile with the lives of women.
Taken together, Giddhbhoj is less about providing easy answers and more about placing uncomfortable questions before the reader. Each story approaches a different social or human contradiction, leaving the reader to decide what can be learned from it.
